There are so many different aspect of personal growth and working on “bettering ourselves”. It can be huge life changes we are working toward, or it can be simple changes we are incorporating into our everyday lives. But, no matter how big or small, improving is improving, plain and simple.

We should always be working toward being a better version of ourselves. I’m not saying you aren’t great exactly how you are, but there is ALWAYS room for growth and improvement. There is always room to learn and explore new experiences that allow us to grow and change as a person. You should be your biggest competition.

What is the point of staying the same, never trying new things, never exploring new passions, never trying to improve and learn? What kind of life is it if we don’t live it to our fullest potential?

The more new experience and life lessons you have, the more you learn about yourself. It is important to always be reflecting on your actions, feelings, etc. so that you can learn from them and improve upon them. The more you learn about yourself, the easier it is to discover WHO you want to be and what you need to work on or improve to accomplish that!

So today I wanted to talk about the small steps you can take to bring about personal growth in your life everyday.

16 small actions you can take to stimulate personal development in your life.

1 | Get to Know Yourself Better Through Self Reflection

Self reflection is a great way to learn more about yourself and can help you become more self-aware. Once we are more self-aware we can start to see what areas of ourselves we would like to improve. Having the ability to reflect on your emotions or reactions to situations is such a healthy ability to have and can definitely help to encourage personal growth and improvement.

2 | Try One Scary Thing

To grow and improve as a person, we NEED to push ourselves outside of our comfort zone and try new things. If you never change anything in your life, nothing will change. Many of us are scared of change, or struggle with fear of failure, but I promise pushing yourself out of your comfort zone provides so much growth and learning.

3 | Develop the Ability to Laugh at Yourself

Don’t take yourself too seriously. If you make a mistake, learn to laugh about it. Having the ability to poke fun at your failures will help you overcome them and move on. The mistakes and failures in your life should always be looked at as growth experiences. As long as you are learning and growing from those failures, than they can be considered a positive in your life.

4 | Surround Yourself with Good People

Have you ever heard the saying “You become most like the top 5 people you spend your time with”. That may not be the exact phrase but you get what I am saying.

So, what does that mean? Well, make sure your top 5 people are AWESOME. No, but seriously, if you hang around with negative people all the time who have no desire to change or grow, that mindset is contagious.

The people you surround yourself with should be supportive, encouraging, share similar interests as you, and have personality traits that you yourself appreciate or want to have.

5 | Let Go of the Negative People

Just like I mentioned in point 4, negativity is contagious. These negative people are the people who complain, shoot down or laugh at your goals, make you feel like you can’t achieve the things you want in your life, or judge you for being YOU. Seriously, why are these people part of your life?

If you feel you have the change or alter yourself to please someone in your life, and you are not able to be your true self around them out of fear of judgement, than you DO NOT need them in your life. This includes family.

Now with family it can be tough, and I am not saying you need to cut them out completely, but either let them know how your feeling and hope they change, OR distance yourself from them as much as you are able to.

6 | Read

An easy one. Books can provide SO MUCH personal growth. Not a big reader? Get on the audio book train. There are so many great reads out there that promote growth and self-improvement. I have read many books that have motivated me in huge ways.

Need some inspiration? These are my top picks:

7 | Practice Gratitude

Everyday, get in the habit of thinking of, or writing down, 3 things you are grateful for. This can have a HUGE impact on your overall happiness and growth as a person.

This works great on terrible days too. When your having an especially bad day is when you need this exercise the most. There is ALWAYS 3 things in your life to be grateful for. Thinking this way will drastically shift your mindset and overall happiness.

8 | Exercise

Making time to be active is a great positive improvement in your life that can obviously bring about self-improvement. Something as easy as getting outside for a walk or a hike is a great place to start.

9 | Try Something New

Try something today that you haven’t tried before. It doesn’t have to be anything that terrifies you or anything extreme. Just do something that you have always wanted to do but have never actually done.

10 | Find Time For Your Passions

We all get busy, I get it. One big thing with self-improvement and personal growth is ensuring you are still making the time to pursue the things that make you happy and challenge you to grow. I know some nights all I want to do is lay on the couch and binge Netflix, and honestly, some night that is what I do. BUT, I work on my blog every single day in some capacity. It is the thing I love and am most passionate about. Sometimes the dishes wait so I can fit it in, but whatever. You find the time where you can to do the things you love.

11 | Put Down Your Phone

Speaking of freeing up some time for your passions, do you know how much time you will have if you just put your phone away. I will be the first to admit I am glued to my phone. It is constantly distracting me. I broke my phone once and I had to wait for a new one to be delivered. I had SO MUCH TIME. I didn’t know what to do with myself and I was so productive! It really opened my eyes.

I try to put my phone away when I am working on my blog, and I get so much more done when I am not picking up my phone every two seconds.

Put your phone away for one hour each day and focus your attention on something else more important. You will find it refreshing I promise!

12 | Set Some Goals

Goal setting is extremely important in personal growth. You need to know what you want to achieve and who you want to be in order to set realistic and attainable goals. I recommend setting SMART long-term (yearly) and short-term (monthly and weekly) goals. Your short-term goals should be lined up with your long-term goals and ultimately helping you achieve them.

Having goals to work towards in life helps you stay on track to improving and growing as a person.

13 | Invest in Yourself

I can’t stress this one enough. If you want to pursue a new skill or hobby, DO IT. You are worth the investment! Learning and growth is always worth the time and money. What do you have to lose? You will learn something about yourself no matter what, and even if you end up not liking it, you will still grow as a person from the experience alone.

14 | Invest in a Planner

My life has improved greatly since simply incorporating a planner into my life. I plan out my months and weeks, set goals, make to-do lists, stay organized, etc.

Something so simple can truly have a BIG impact on your personal growth. There is something about seeing your month planned out and writing your goals down at the beginning of every month that just keeps me motivated. I also like to use a planner that has some sort of monthly reflection section so I can track goal progress, etc.

Here are some great options:

15 | Do Something You Have Been Putting Off

What have you been putting off or procrastinating? Do it. You will feel better and sometimes just starting something you have been putting off sparks your productivity! You also won’t have that task weighing on your shoulders anymore so you can fully put your focus into other, more enjoyable things.

16 | Make a List

Making lists is a great personal growth activity. There is a variety of lists you can make that would work as an improvement activity. Make a list of everything you want to achieve in life, a list of your greatest strengths, a list of areas in your life you wish to improve, a list of positive affirmations, a list of gratitude.

Lists are a great way to put things into perspective and also have as a point of reference when needed. For example, if you have a list of positive affirmations about yourself, and you are having a day where you feel defeated, you can pull it out and remind yourself that you are worthy of everything you are working for.
